This is all propaganda. Sure it happens in Dubai, but it also happens all over the world too; a clever writer could have made this same article in Canada. There are LOTS of people there who are bankrupt and living in cars and tents... all over America in fact. Girls husband in jail? Like many expats, they get caught up in overspending and think they are rich, then at the end of the day they realize they over consumed and who's fault is that? UAE has to be tough on debtors to discourage them... if you look at the countries history you will see how in the past it was a well know destination to go to, take out large sums of credit then disappear... the country was experiencing so much fraud by expats they really had to crack down. Everyone who lives there knows what a "runner" is. Maybe western countries don't jail people, but they also know the person isn't going to flee the country, they will say put and over time repay the debt and at the very least contribute to society.

The workers being slaves? Aren't we all? Unless your rich we ALL need to work. It is funny how the author refers to the Bangladeshi guy as a slave... says it takes workers 2 years to clear their debts before they can return home and yet this guy has been there for 4? Sounds like a choice... why, because he took out loans from loan sharks in his own country and if he goes back there he will be jailed... So, where is the article on Bangladesh and how they send debtors to prision? Every city in the world has been built on the backs of the working class (myself included) and this is the way its been since the beginnings of civilization!

The article is so bias and sensationalist I stopped reading it there...

Bad stuff happens all over the world, in much of it way worse than what happens in Dubai, but people will only buy the paper if it talks about and promotes the bad in the places their interested in. That's a fact!
