Emirates Road to be expanded to 12 lanes

The Emirates City's picture

Emirates Road is being turned into a 12-lane highway to cope with the increasing traffic congestion on the road, said a senior official at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

The 35-km stretch of the highway between Sharjah-Dubai borders and Arabian Ranches roundabout will be expanded from the existing three lanes to six lanes on each direction.

The RTA had earlier planned to expand the road to five-lane dual carriageway. "We have modified the project and now instead of having five lanes on each side, we will have six lanes on each direction considering the fast increase in the number of road users and a number of developments coming up along the road," the official added.

The expansion work already started in June 17 last year and is scheduled to finish in August. "It will take a bit longer now because of the additional work," he said.
Number of lanes will also be increased on all the seven interchanges on the Emirates Road to avoid congestion at exits. (Gulf News)

This is already done

This project is over with and already done. It has helped the traffic so much, however the 20 km between Sharjah-Dubai border and Emirates City is only 3 lanes each and this is causing bottle-neck every single day at rush hours. The really good news is when Sharjah and Ajman decide to widen up this part of the road.

One would think that the

One would think that the lanes in the Ajman side of the Emirates Road will also be widened in the coming years.
As Ajman does have to invest heavily in to improvement of roads to serve the 100.000's people moving to the area.

Exciting times in the Emirate of Ajman

The biggest chunk of that

The biggest chunk of that road is within Sharjah and the biggest challenge that causes the bottle neck is at Dubai-Sharjah border or what is called the National Paint round about. There is very little room to widen the fly-over that they recently built. Sharjah are unique in building roads in a way that never solve a problem. They love spending billions in road projects that after they finish keep the original traffic congestion intact. It is really amazing, you need to see it to understand it.

How will they widen the road

I have also wondered how Sharja would widen their road on the E311. The buildings are built so close to the highway already the only solution would be to tear down one side, which I think would be feisable, but the buildings all look pretty new.

RTA

Its RTA announcement so the emirates road will take the shape till SHJ. border, now national paint area is the look out of SHJ. please note that RTA belongs to Dubai only.

Now we have to see that how SHJ. react on this news.
